Hedy Lamarr celebrated her 85th birthday on November 9, 1999. To mark this occasion, the exhibit "Hommage à Hedy Lamarr" opened in June 1999 in Vienna, the city in which Hedy Lamarr was born. "Hommage à Hedy Lamarr" premiered on September 7, 1998 as an installation at "Ars Electronica" in Linz, Austria. The annual "Ars Electronica" is one of the most prestigious international festivals of art, technology and society. The theme of the 1998 festival was Info War, featuring numerous contributions from artists and scientists dealing with the interrelationships between military technologies and civilian society. On September 8-9, a symposium was held on the subject of "Info War," attended by such prominent participants as Douglas Rushkoff, Paul Virilio and Manuel De Landa. Media theorists Friedrich Kittler and Geert Lovink served as the festival's scholarly advisors.
